Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist developed by Novo Nordisk. FDA-approved as Ozempic (2017) for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy (2021) for chronic weight management, and Rybelsus (2019) as the first oral GLP-1 agonist, semaglutide is a 31-amino-acid synthetic peptide with a C18 fatty diacid moiety enabling once-weekly dosing. In the STEP 1 trial, participants achieved 14.9% mean body weight reduction, and the SELECT trial demonstrated a 20% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events.
